Experts at NordVPN have devised a simple test to work out if your phone is spying on you.

By deliberately discussing random topics within earshot of your phone, you can see how long it takes for these subjects to appear in your social media feeds.

NordVPN researchers found adverts appeared on their devices just days after discussing a topic they had never even Googled before.

Some apps other than virtual assistants may also have microphone permissions buried in settings.

This means you might be consenting to be spied on whenever you agree to an app's terms and conditions.

To deactivate Siri on your iPhone simply go to Settings and set the talk to Siri option to 'Off' Google Assistant on Android can be deactivated on the same way.
