•Curriculum shake-up expected to boost take-up of arts subjects
75% Informative
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has ordered a wide-ranging review of curriculum and assessment in England .
It could recommend widening the English baccalaureate ( Ebacc ), a measure blamed for squeezing out arts GCSEs .
The number of children taking music, drama and design technology GCSE has fallen dramatically in a decade as schools try to hit Ebacc targets.
The review will cover curriculum and assessment but any decisions about school accountability are not specifically within its terms of reference and will be taken separately by the government.
Professor Becky Francis is widely respected in the sector for her evidence-led approach but is vocal about taking a “social justice” view and wanting to challenge “class ceilings”.
