The FDA says the U.S. food supply is still "one of the safest in the world" Recalls are an indicator that the safety system is working, the FDA says.
CDC data shows there are more recalls this year than last year , but not unusually high.
There were 179 high-risk recalls in the fiscal year that ended in September .
Environmental Working Group : Inspections by FDA of food facilities are falling short of a congressional mandate.
They have also criticized the agency for not requiring testing of irrigation water sprayed on crops.
"These are the most preventable, needless deaths imaginable," said Scott Faber , senior vice president for government relations.
