•Speaker Mike Johnson says he supports banning transgender women from using women's bathrooms
68% Informative
Rep. Nancy Mace , R-S.C., introduced a resolution this week that would ban transgender women from using women's bathrooms and other facilities at the Capitol .
She said Tuesday the bill "absolutely" targets Rep.-elect Sarah McBride , D-Del., the first openly transgender person elected to Congress .
House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday said he supports restricting "single-sex facilities" in the Capitol , including restrooms, to “individuals of that biological sex”.
McBride had responded to Mace 's resolution on Monday , writing in a post on X that, "Every day Americans go to work with people who have life journeys different than their own and engage with them respectfully, I hope members of Congress can muster that same kindness." She added in a second post, "This is a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing. We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars.".
