American astronaut Sunita Williams met with students from the newly opened Erie Migration District School in Kingsville .
The event lasted about 11 minutes , while the ISS was in contact through ARISS — Amateur Radio on the International Space Station — over the Atlantic Ocean .
The purpose of the question-and-answer session was to inspire student interest in science, technology and mathematics.
“There are a lot of sort of sort-of scary things,” said Williams .
“Our spacecraft, on the way up here, was making some funny noises and we learned that there were some malfunctions in some of the jets. That’s a little bit scary, but we’re trained for those types of things and we do a bit of risk analysis.
