Retailers are understood to have been contacted by the Treasury to make the case for Rachel Reeves’s tax raid ahead of a public letter that warned over changes announced in her maiden Budget .
The letter was organised by the British Retail Consortium ( BRC ) and signed by 80 companies.
It warned the industry faces 7bn in increased costs as a result of changes to employers’ National Insurance and a higher minimum wage rise.
