Rep. Brad Wenstrup , a decorated combat surgeon, will retire in six weeks .
He helped treat Rep. Steve Scalise , who was shot by a gunman at a congressional baseball practice in June 2017 .
He says he is haunted by thoughts of the carnage that could have ensued if Scalise and his security detail had not been at the baseball game.
Wenstrup urged arriving medics to rush an IV to Scalise , to ensure he stayed hydrated.
Scalise: "In a weird way, your body kind of goes numb. You know, as bad as the wounds were, I guess my body had been shutting down a lot of the real pain" "We are just very, very tight in our friendship," Scalise told CBS News .
