As data centers boom, CPS Energy works on $1.3B plan for transmission needs

The city-owned utility is planning a new switching station on San Antonio ’s West Side.

Data centers could consume 9% of all U.S. electricity generating capacity by 2030 , a study says.

The city-owned utility also has large battery sites in the works that will be able to soak up excess power when lines are at risk of being overcrowded.

In total, CPS has 15 new or upgraded transmission lines approved by ERCOT .

Trustees Monday also approved $120 million in contracts related to transmission conductors.
