But some see him as a 'saviour' in a country where numbers of churchgoers are in rapid decline.
White Christian groups have tended to vote Republican in presidential contests.
This pattern dates back to the 1960s , when the Democratic party became associated with the civil rights movement and white Christian groups began migrating to the Republican Party .
But there were signs of departures from familiar patterns, with Muslim voters lurching towards Republican Party in Michigan .
