•Biden Heads to G20 as Trump’s Shadow Looms
77% Informative
President Joe Biden is heading to his final G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil .
Biden has often used the annual summit to flex diplomatic muscle, advance policy initiatives and hold key bilateral talks on the forum’s sidelines.
The G20 established in 1999 , on the heels of the Asian financial crisis, by the older G7 as a new international body.
He also will likely attempt to reassure jittery leaders about American partnerships as they hastily prepare for another volatile Trump presidency. “I don’t know what he can assure them with, given some of the personnel choices we’ve already seen,” says Mietek Boduszyski , a former U.S. diplomat who now teaches foreign policy at Pomona College . “But maybe, you know, a little pep talk that it’s a longer-term kind of a game.” Copyright 2024 U.S. News & World Report .
