•Wes Streeting accused of abandoning maternity care promises
65% Informative
Streeting strongly backed conclusions from a cross-party inquiry earlier this year that found “shockingly poor quality” maternity services under which mothers and babies were harmed and even died.
The inquiry’s report found that new mothers risked suffering lifelong injuries as hospitals covered up endemic failures in the maternity system.
The former Conservative MP who headed the inquiry said she has since been rebuffed when requesting a meeting with Streeting.
Clarke wants Streeting to commit to at least the same recommendations as the previous government did.
The previous government agreed to recommendations surrounding pain relief, keeping mothers and babies together, and commissioning research on the economic impact of birth trauma.
Clarke said: “It’s very clear that this issue is not going away and on the contrary there's even more evidence coming to light”.
