The FDA gave the green light for patients to have the option to collect their own vaginal samples instead of undergoing traditional HPV tests or Pap smears.

Countries including Australia and the Netherlands have already been providing self-collection tests to segments of their populations.

Missouri ranked 13th in the cervical cancer death rate in the U.S. Missouri fared among the worst nationally for cervical cancer deaths and up-to-date Pap smears in 2022 .

Missouri Cancer Registry and Research Center found that 78% of women ages 21 to 65 have had a Pap smear in the past three years , slightly below the national average at 82% .

Results will follow via telehealth, and additional recommended actions will be clearly communicated via messages or a visit with a medical provider.

Kay said that while self-collection is an incredible achievement in cervical cancer detection, it is not meant to replace the current screening options.

About 80% of people have HPV in their systems at some point in their lives.
