Global carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels are set to be the highest on record in 2024 .

CO2 emissions from fossil fuels will reach 37.4 billion tonnes by the end of the year .

This figure is based on preliminary data and computer modelling, but if it turns out to be accurate it would mark a record high.

The UK will have emitted 0.3 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2024 or about 0.8 per cent of the total global emissions.

This compares with a heavy polluter like China , which still generates about 70% of its electricity from fossil fuel.

The Paris Agreement is an international pact to control and limit climate change.

It hopes to hold the increase in the global average temperature to below 2C (3.6F) and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5C ( 2.7F ) Around 82 per cent of US energy comes from fossil fuels, while only 8.8 per cent is from renewable sources.
