Fine particulates, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are three of the six 'criteria' pollutants.
Burning fossil fuels is one of the main sources for all three of these pollutants.
Researchers from Yan’an University in China investigated whether these pollutants might impact the incidence of miscarriage in pregnant women.
They gathered data from air quality monitoring stations in Baoji , a city in northwestern China , recorded between 2017 and 2019 .
They then analyzed data on 770 pregnant women who were admitted to two hospitals.
Of these women, aged 19 to 44 , 154 suffered miscarriages and 616 delivered full-term babies.
Those who were pregnant in spring and winter had a higher incidence of miscarriages than those who.
