The "ground prototype" for what evolved into part of NASA 's lunar orbit Gateway is now open to visitors at Space Center Houston .

Guests enter the module through the same hatch where a lunar lander would dock.

The habitat may no longer match HALO , but it is part of its story said Northrop Grumman's Jeff Siders .

"We hope this display will help share the excitement of what is to come," Siders said.

He previously developed online content for the National Space Society and Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin , helped establish the space tourism company Space Adventures and currently serves on the History Committee of the American Astronautical Society , the advisory committee for The Mars Generation and leadership board of For All Moonkind . In 2009 , he was inducted into the U.S. Space Camp Hall of Fame in Huntsville , Alabama .
