Baylor College of Medicine researchers have been investigating the star-shaped cells in our brains known as astrocytes, which act as microscopic storage boxes that hold our memories.

This unique filing system is accessed by a specific set of neurons known as engrams, which manage the 'brain stars' by regulating and retrieving those memories on demand.

Previously, it's been thought that neuronal networks were solely responsible for learning and memory.

While understanding the brain remains a work in progress, we imagine that future treatments to target memories will be a little more sophisticated than those used by Lacuna Incorporated , in the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The study was published in the journal Nature .
