Before planting crops this year , southern Alberta producers were concerned about drought-like conditions after a lack of moisture in 2023 and last winter .
But according to the final 2024 Alberta Crop Report , estimated dryland yields of mayor crops were 112.4 per cent of their five-year average across the south.
The Taber area experienced much more rain than normal, but precipitation was patchy across the province, said Alison Davie .
The St. Mary River Irrigation District chair George Lohues said this season ’s reduced allocation will result in much-improved winter storage levels and “optimism for a less stressful irrigation season in 2025 ” The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) has predicted La Niña will start soon.
