The number of wooden grain elevators in Alberta peaked at 1,755 in 1933 — about 150 stand today .

The settlement of the prairies is inextricably linked to the railroads.

Historians and artists work to document Alberta ’s lost legacy of prairie sentinels.

Drought and depression took their toll in the grain-growing areas, particularly in southeastern Alberta , and many golden dreams turned to dust.

Hauling grain 50 or 80 bushels at a time to a country elevator doesn’t cut it these days — it takes semi-trailers hauling loads to huge concrete grain terminals.

The wooden country elevator, once an important resource and centre for grain farmers, is an endangered species.

The elevators have been repainted, at a cost of nearly $50,000 each.

Other than a single elevator in Stavely now owned by a farmer, Nanton ’s are the only wooden elevators left along Highway 2 south of Calgary .

The town's success is all the more important because of the loss of High River's last elevator, which burned in May 2003 .
