•Varcoe: 'Another power grab' — Get ready for a legal scrap over Ottawa's emissions cap
68% Informative
Alberta is the only sector in the country to face a mandatory emissions cap on Canada ’s oil and gas sector.
Industry, business groups and the Alberta government are lining up to push back against the regulations.
The province contends the cap is unconstitutional and a legal challenge is already in the works.
In 2022 , the sector generated $187 billion in GDP and accounted for 30 per cent of the country’s exports.
A federal law that impacts resource production is not automatically off-side, says Andrew Leach , a University of Alberta professor.
“The presumption of constitutionality runs with the federal government,” he says.
