More than 5,500 party members will cast their ballots on Danielle Smith's leadership in Red Deer this weekend .
Smith has declined to specify a hard number she’s seeking to get on Saturday , only saying she hopes to improve on the 54 per cent support she got in the party's run-off leadership race in 2022 .
Political watchers say Smith needs to exceed the 53.8 per cent mark she received in the 2022 leadership race.
Mount Royal University political scientist Duane Bratt says Smith may have her sights set higher than 70-plus per cent mark.
Bratt said Smith should be trying to better the 86 per cent support Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi received in winning his party’s leadership.
He said balancing the needs of the party with those of all Albertans will be a challenge.
