There are 2.82 million private landlords in England , according to the latest English Private Landlord Survey .
Private landlords pay income tax on their net rental profit but do not pay national insurance.
They must also pay Capital Gains Tax ( CGT ) when they sell an asset (home).
Prime Minister has inadvertently opened a can of worms with his comments.
If social housing was more accessible for low-income households, there would be less need for private landlords.
But, until that is the case, they provide housing which is urgently needed.
Taxing wealth properly is urgent and necessary, but Labour must not accidentally drive decent landlords out of the housing market.
