Ava, 11 , returned home from school in tears because she did not have a smartphone.

Mum Celeste Lewis said she felt guilty after her daughter's school encouraged pupils to use their phones in lessons.

The school said it had an "acceptable use" policy for phones, but wanted children to be prepared for the future.

Unlike in England , there is no guidance advising schools to ban phones in classrooms in Wales .

Mum-of-three Bethan said she thought smartphones should be banned for under-16s.

She said her 15-year-old son missed out on his first invite to the cinema because she had not allowed him on messaging apps other children used.

The Welsh government said it recognised the impact mobile phones could have on children and young people.
