May 2024 was the largest geomagnetic storm hit Earth in two decades .

It produced aurorae as far south as the Canary Islands off Africa , the Florida Keys in the U.S. and the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico .

The last several months seem to have been the peak of the current solar cycle.

The most intense such storm ever observed was the Carrington Event of 1859.

The nature and frequency of solar superstorms challenge the current models and techniques used to predict space weather, says Ying Liu .

"They also raise serious concerns about what we should do in terms of infrastructure development in order to be better prepared for extreme space weather," says Liu .
