U.K. and U.S. researchers reconstruct billions of years of lunar history.
Apollo 16 astronauts brought more than 95 kg of samples from the moon back to Earth in 1972 .
The moon's distinctive, heavily cratered appearance is the result of countless collisions with asteroids since its formation 4.5 billion years ago .
Researchers from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the Catholic University of America and Birkbeck College , London contributed to the study and are co-authors on the paper.
"It's remarkable to think that the samples Apollo 16 brought back more than half a century ago still have secrets to reveal about the moon's history," says Dr. Nottingham .
