The Mariana dam collapsed in Minas Gerais , Brazil on 5 November 2015 , killing 19 people.
The dam was owned by Samarco , a joint venture between mining giants Vale and BHP .
It was used to store waste from iron ore mining and unleashed tens of millions of cubic metres of toxic waste and mud.
620,000 people are taking BHP to court in the UK over the disaster.
A separate trial against Samarco ’s second parent company, Brazilian mining company Vale .
BHP and Vale have made a fresh offer to the Brazilian government to pay out more than 170bn reais ($ 45bn ) in compensation.
All companies involved say they remain “committed” to repairing the damage caused.
UK legal action against BHP began in 2018 when residents and some local companies and authorities decided to seek what their lawyers describe as fair and full compensation” for the damage suffered.
