But for some, the practice known locally as galamsey provides livelihoods and an informal boost to the West African nation’s economy.
With a general election approaching in December , the issue is proving to be a hot-button issue for lawmakers.
In just the first half of this year , 36% of the gold produced in Ghana came from legal mines, worth $1.7 billion .
London Bullion Market Association has become the global standard for gold and silver refineries around the world.
It maintains a “good delivery list’ of about 65 gold refineries worldwide that have been proven to source gold legally.
Only one refinery in South Africa is accredited to issue the hallmark.
Around 20% of the gold produced around world comes from small-scale miners, but less than 0.05% of it goes through an LBMA-accredited refinery.
