Two Texas cities illustrate the divide in American politics between the potential electorate in the country and the actual electorate, which is heavily white and wealthier.
The discrepancy has been the subtext of U.S. politics for the past two decades .
The presumption has been that closing that gap between Lewisville and Flower Mound would help Democrats and hurt Republicans .
But this presidential election has flipped the script.
Texas has had recent experience with a surge of new voters, and it didn't turn out as badly for Republicans as the party feared.
One fifth of Lewisville 's residents are foreign-born, and many are shut out of the political process.
The level of political engagement is just lower in the town than in Flower Mound , which has a population of 80,000 .
“I don't want nothing given to me,” Ivan Barrera , 32 , says he's trying to persuade his parents, Mexican immigrants, to support Trump .
His parents have been citizens for decades , but they still are not registered to vote.
“That's when you go back and say, Why did I vote?’.
