Lori Ruggles , 65 , has end-stage liver disease due to chemotherapy treatment for systemic scleroderma, an autoimmune disease.
She was told a six-month stay, including accommodations, travel expenses and nursing support, could cost between $35,000 to $55,000 .
Government funding is available to help patients who need life-saving care, but it only kicks in if a patient’s household income is less than $42,000 . “A lot of patients, if they’re not eligible for a transplant for whatever reason, it's palliative care,” said Karen Stacey .
Health Minister Adrian Dix said there are supports available for patients in medical need who have to travel to the Lower Mainland .
Ruggles said she is “beyond grateful” to be listed on the active transplant list.
A new liver would buy her more time with her two kids and six grandchildren.
