Two UN committees found that Finland violated the rights of the Sámi by granting mineral exploration permits in Finnish Sápmi.
The case was brought to the U.N. by three sisters, aged 13 , 15 and 16 at the time of the first filing in 2021 after the Geological Survey of Finland applied for permits to explore for gold, copper and iron.
U.N. decision says Finnish laws fail to recognize traditional structures and they fail to listen to the siidas and their participants.
The result is that Finland is violating Indigenous rights and International human rights conventions.
Sami Sami are suffering from the impacts of climate change and industrial projects imposed on them.
Indigenous peoples have inherent rights, they say, and we have to defend those rights, court by court and case by case.
We hope that all of these cases inspire other Indigenous peoples and perhaps also provide hope that you should never give up: always seek the next opportunity where you can take your case and seek help.
