The Super Mario Bros. Movie was clearly written and made by people who have an affection for the iconic video game franchise.

With one exception, none of the movies I’m going to highlight in this post aim for some kind of artistic “greatness,” whatever that is; regardless, they can still achieve a specific kind of entertainment — making people feel good, without resorting to lowest-common-denominator tactics.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a movie that really did aim for beauty and meaning, that wanted to make you feel something profound.

It's an uplifting story, with beautiful cinematography and a stirring score (and a sublime cover of Space Oddity by Kristen Wiig ).
