In 2023 something very strange happened in the United States . The adult obesity rate, which had tripled since the 1980s , appeared to fall.

The strongest candidates are the drugs Ozempic and Wegovy , two “semaglutide’s medications that have helped people with obesity achieve significant weight loss.

In the past few years , the global appetite for these drugs has been remarkable but in the US their uptake has been particularly dramatic.

The NHS is backlogged and crippled by current healthcare costs, many of which are driven by obesity.

The cost of obesity to the NHS in 2021 was 11.4 billion8 per cent of the health service’s budget.

Productivity losses due to obesity are thought to cost the economy a further 8.9 billion a year.

Given the problems that Britain faces, that is an opportunity we cannot ignore. Daniel Susskind is an economist at Oxford University .
