Rodney Wilson founded Lesbian and Gay History Month in 1994 in the United States .
Now known as LGBTQ History Month , it’s celebrated every October , which is the same month as National Coming Out Day ( Oct. 11 ) Wilson : "I think it's really important that LGBTQ people are open about it, that we are out about it".
Gabrielle Hays is a Communities Correspondent for the PBS NewsHour out of St. Louis .
Her story is part of a Missouri exhibit preserving LGBTQ+ history.
Hays: "We need to be doing everything we can to make the world, make our country, more welcoming, more understanding".
