The first Tamils arrived on Diego Garcia in October 2021 , saying they had been fleeing persecution and trying to sail to Canada to claim asylum.
The Indian Ocean territory, located hundreds of miles away from any other population, is viewed as an important strategic base for the US .
Access to the island is heavily restricted and it has long been shrouded in rumour and mystery.
