Soviet Union sent Lunokhod 1 to the Moon in 1970 , a little over a year after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon.
The first robotic exploration of a body other than our own came earlier than you might think, with humans only beating our robot pals to the the Moon by a year .
The mission was supposed to last for three lunar days , or around 88.5 Earth days.
During this time, it had traveled over 10 kilometers ( 6 miles ) and conducted more than 500 lunar soil tests.
