French far-right leader Marine Le Pen is accused of misusing public funds in the European Parliament .

Le Pen was a member of the National Rally , formerly known as the National Front , from 2004 to 2017 .

She's accused of presiding over an unlawful system under which public money was diverted to pay staffers focused on national party business.

If found guilty, Le Pen could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and fined up to E1 million .

National Rally's euroskeptic and nationalist credentials are unlikely to be outraged by the alleged use of European funds to further its "national cause" "Her core electorate probably doesn't really care," Lorimer says.

"There's a way that Le Pen can spin this in her favor: By suggesting that this is a political trial," she says.
