Study based on four sets of academic surveys conducted between 2004 and 2023 .

In-person surveys were conducted together with colleagues at Peking University's Research Center on Contemporary China (RCCC) in 2004 , 2009 and 2014 .

Tibet and Xingiang were excluded.

The study has been accepted for publication by The China Journal .
