In 'Defectors,' journalist Paola Ramos explores the effects of Trumpism on the Latino vote

Paola Ramos' new book, "Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What It Means for America," is out now.

Ramos: "I hope this book gives people the curiosity to understand us a little better, to understand our history and to understand why we act a certain way" Ramos: A search for belonging more often than not is driving some people toward Trumpism.

There's a visceral sense of disgust that has been ingrained in some communities to dehumanize people, like immigrants, trans people, or women.

The author structured "Defectors" in three parts: Tribalism, traditionalism and trauma.

She was surprised at everyone's ability to humanize each other because there was a source of pain behind all of it.

Paola's hope is that that courage that led a lot of Latino voters to vote for Joe Biden in 2020 , driven by the belief that politicians in general would finally do comprehensive immigration form.
