•B.C. election subsidy heavily favours NDP — for a simple reason
66% Informative
Conservative leader John Rustad recently flagged one of the NDP 's biggest advantages heading in this year ’s election.
But the current funding gap between the two parties is less a matter of rigging than a formula.
Parties receive an annual subsidy of $ 1.81 (not $ 2 ) for each vote cast in its favour in the last election.
The formula favours established parties, not newcomers or upstarts.
Rustad estimates that annual payments plus a 50-per-cent reimbursement from the last election gave the New Democrats an $8-million advantage over the Conservatives going into this election.
“They’ve got a huge war chest,” he said. “We’re not going to be able to compete with that head-on.”.
