Mayor Doug Diny admitted he moved the box to his office on Sept. 22 and “took a few photos to memorialize the action” Video surveillance footage showed him carting the city’s outdoor ballot drop box inside on Sunday while sporting a Department of Public Works jacket and hard hat.
Diny said the box was relocated to a safe indoor location until “certain issues that the clerk is aware of are addressed” City Council President Lisa Rasmussen had sharp words for the mayor and is now asking for a public apology.
In 2022 , the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that ballot drop boxes were not statutorily authorized and banned their use.
The challenge was successful and the Wisconsin Elections Commission issued updated guidance for municipal clerks.
Protesters plan to rally against Diny ’s actions at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday outside of City Hall , 407 Grant St., Wausau .
