Metals in the body from environmental pollutants is associated with progression of harmful plaque buildup in the arteries.
Metal exposure from environmental pollution associated with increased buildup of calcium in the coronary arteries at a level that is comparable to traditional risk factors like smoking and diabetes.
The findings could lead to new prevention and treatment strategies that target metal exposure.
The results are published in the flagship journal of the American College of Cardiology .
