A review of more than 7,000 studies has revealed the impact of microplastic pollution on the planet.
Microplastics are found in the sea, rivers and lakes, as well as the ice at the poles .
They are often confused with marine plankton, and enter the food chain.
By 2040 , the amount of plastic in our oceans has increased by around 50% , according to the study.
Since 2019 , the European Commission has banned the manufacture and marketing of oxo-biodegradable plastics.
In November , the United Nations will perhaps hold the definitive meeting to reach a binding global agreement on microplastics.
“It is not about eliminating plastics to zero , but rather analyzing which are essential and which are not, looking for alternatives,” Morales says.
