F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aka the Lightning II has survived a lot of turbulence in the roughly 30 years since the Pentagon first conceived of a do-it-all stealth fighter.
The idea behind the JSF was that different versions of it would work equally well flying from land, from aircraft carriers and thanks to a short takeoff and vertical-landing capability also from smaller assault ships without catapults or arrester wires.
But costs rose as budgets and thus projected orders fell, and the vaunted commonality withered.
And bureaucracy overseeing the Lightning’s development grew huge, unwieldy and unresponsive.
