But, that power balance has been challenged in recent years by a new generation of workers with new demands, Carroll writes.
The Great Resignation gave rise to other workplace trends whereby employees flexed their newfound muscle.
“Rage quitting” became a fad, as people would abandon jobs with zero or minimal advanced warning, often in a highly dramatic manner, lambasting their bosses in person or in writing on their way out.
Workers were emboldened to adopt this tactic by widespread staffing shortages, as well as social media reinforcement.
Mainstream media responded to these developments with its usual, evenhanded disposition, reporting them dispassionately.
The Fight for $ 15 was a textbook case of moving the Overton window, the range of policies acceptable to the average person.
Small business owners and managers actually have a basic sense of fairness, at the least at least at the small level at the bottom of the line.
