US consumer watchdog finds that school lunch fees are taking a toll on parents.
Low-income families typically pay as much as 60 cents per dollar in fees when paying for school lunches electronically.
Schools must offer fee-free option to pay by cash or check, but there’s rarely transparency around it, report finds.
If your school is located in a low-income area, you may also check whether your district qualifies for the Community Eligibility Provision .
The CEP would allow the school to provide free breakfast and lunch to all enrolled students.
