But right now the business rates system is a competitiveness disaster for this country.
Labour committed in its manifesto to reform the mess to bring back investment and breathe new life into English high streets.
The CBI spoke to a cross-section of dozens of members in some of the most affected sectors.
We know reforming a complex system like business rates will take time, so we will need a bridge between the current system and any long-term, substantive reform.
Most likely that’s short-term support for the hardest hit areas and freezing standard and small business multipliers where they are until after the 2026 revaluation.
