Around Africa ’s Chad basin, up to five million people have migrated from their homes in recent decades , to flee conflict, but also dwindling water resources partly blamed on climate change.
The International Organisation for Migration estimated earlier this year that some 7.4m Africans left their homes due to the effects of climate change in 2022 .
By the middle of the century , five per cent of Africa 's 2bn population could be on the move.
People fleeing short-term climate disasters can find themselves in crowded accommodation with poor sanitation and meagre health care.
These have in the past been shown to heighten the chances of outbreaks of diseases like malaria , dengue and cholera.
Climate change migrants could also find themselves displaced to areas with endemic pathogens or parasites they have not faced before.
When they return home, they could carry these parasites back with them.
