70% Informative

The group of 538 electors’ through which American voters at large officially choose their president and vice-president.

Each of the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia , are granted a certain number of electors according to their population.

The winner of each state takes all of its votes - except in Maine and Nebraska .

If we assume that the votes of the 43 “safe” (or thereabouts) states, plus DC , go the way pollsters expect, then there are three swing-state combinations that mean the candidates could win 269 votes apiece.

This is unlikely, especially without a viable independent or third -party candidate in the race to complicate arithmetic.
