Researchers at Tel Aviv University and the University of Colorado Boulder found that sunflowers in a field can co-ordinate circular motions of their growing stems to minimize the amount of shade each plant experiences.
Circumnutations were first identified by Charles and Francis Darwin in 1880 .
The team studied this phenomenon in a controlled laboratory environment.
They found that the random movements of individual sunflower crowns play a vital role in minimising shading.
