This is my last newsletter for CJR , as I am moving on from my job as the magazine’s chief digital writer.

As I reflected on the last seven years of writing about the intersection of media and technology, I started to think about what (if anything) has changed since my first CJR piece was published.

When I started writing about the social Web at the Globe and Mail in 2004 or so, I was convinced that it had the potential to change the world for the better.

Unfortunately, the next decade would provide plenty of evidence that social media enables all of the good things about people but also all the bad things.

Facebook inadvertently helped enable what many have described as a genocide in Myanmar .

Yesterday , authorities in France charged Pavel Durov , the founder of the messaging app Telegram , with complicity in crimes committed on the platform and refusal to cooperate with law enforcement.

A jury in Nevada convicted Robert Telles , a former local official, of murdering Jeff German , a reporter at the Las Vegas Review-Journal .

Russia published a list of people who it says are now barred from entering the country.
