Pesticides are an important management tool for mosquito control as well as for other pests that impact agriculture, experts say.
New York City health officials began spraying pesticides to kill mosquitoes and reduce the risk of West Nile virus.
The pesticides pose little risk to humans and pets, but could pose a danger to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
At least 33 states have reported cases of mosquito-borne illnesses this year .
Those who care for a butterfly sanctuary on church grounds are worried that the pesticides will kill the butterflies.
"We need them as pollinators, and we need them for the beauty and the joy they bring," says Keith De Cesare .
"No one really wants these sprays in their backyard," says Riffell .
